Alawite Association of the United States Condemns Massacre of Alawite Civilians in Syria, Calls for Immediate International Action

Washington, D.C.Washington, D.C. – The Alawite Association of the United States (AAUS) strongly condemns the brutal massacre of at least two dozen Alawite civilians in Al Mukhtareyah, Syria and surrounding regions. Reports from Alawite activists and war monitors indicate that gunmen stormed the town, executing unarmed residents and leaving their bodies in the streets. Video footage verified by Reuters confirms the mass killing, showing at least 20 victims lying bloodied in the town center. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident and has now resulted in over a thousand deaths. We call upon the international community to take swift action.

This horrific attack underscores the ongoing persecution faced by the Alawite community, a peaceful and historically nonviolent group that continues to suffer from sectarian violence. The targeting of civilians based on religious identity is a grave violation of human rights and international law. The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to these atrocities.

The Alawite Association of the United States urges the U.S. government, international organizations, and human rights advocates to take immediate action. Perpetrators of this massacre must be held accountable, and urgent measures must be implemented to prevent further sectarian killings. Additionally, the international community must condemn these acts of violence and provide security guarantees to vulnerable Alawite communities at risk of continued persecution. Political representation and human rights protections must also be ensured for Alawites and other minority groups in accordance with UN Resolution 2254. In addition we call for a non-centralised government in Syria that guarantees participation in the governing of all factions of the Syrian society and the release of detained prisoners. These unlawful detentions obstruct religious minorities, including Alawites from productive engagement with the new government.

The Alawite Association of the United States is dedicated to advocating for the protection, dignity, and rights of the Alawite Syrian ethno-religious minority. Our vision is a Middle East where all religious and ethnic communities, including the Alawites, can live in safety, dignity, and peace, free from persecution.

“This massacre is a horrifying reminder of the dangers facing Alawites and other religious minorities in Syria,” said Dr. Morhaf Ibrahim, President of AAUS. “We call on world leaders to take decisive action to protect these communities and prevent further bloodshed. Justice and accountability cannot wait.”
