AAUS is Deeply Concerned About Recent Allegations Against Syrian Charge dAffaire in Washington DC

Washington, D.C. – The Alawite Association of the United States (AAUS) is deeply concerned by recent allegations that Syria’s Charge dAffaires  in Washington, D.C., was involved in the 2016 abduction of American journalist Lindsey Snell.

The Syrian diplomat was previously a member of the al-Nusra Front before later assuming senior positions within Syria’s interim authorities. The serious allegation now is that he participated in the kidnapping of an American citizen. Such a claim demands a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation.

These allegations also raise important questions for the United States. Americans deserve to know what vetting was conducted before an individual with a publicly documented history in al-Nusra Front was accepted as Syria’s senior diplomatic representative in Washington. The recent allegations concerning the kidnapping of an American citizen make that question all the more urgent.

More importantly, this case raises a broader concern about how Syria’s new state institutions are being built. Across the government, military, intelligence, and diplomatic corps, key appointments increasingly appear to reflect ideological loyalty rather than merit, professionalism, and commitment to the rule of law.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Alawites, Druze, Christians, Kurds, and other vulnerable communities continue to face violence, persecution, arbitrary detention, and discrimination with little accountability.

The free world is not simply recognizing a new Syrian government—it is helping shape the character of the Syrian state for generations to come. Short-term geopolitical considerations should not outweigh the long-term consequences of legitimizing institutions without demanding accountability, equal citizenship, and protection of all communities. The choices made today will determine whether Syria moves toward genuine stability or deeper extremism and renewed conflict.
